George Mountford Trophy – 16th September 2023

On Saturday 16th September the Juniors played the George Mountford Trophy.

Our Junior Captain, Lewis Foxall, continued his excellent form returning a gross 73 for 40 points to win the 18-hole Division. Lewis has played some outstanding golf over the summer and is now down to a 4.5 handicap. Second place was taken by Theo Khalifa on 37 points.

In the 9-hole Division it was Henry Smith coming in first with a score of 18 points, ahead of Toby Dawson in second on 14 points. Our Short Course Division was won with an excellent nett 29 by Jude Knight who has incredibly won the last 4 events he’s played. Second place going to Stanley Tipping with nett 32. Special mention to Ila Marson making a fantastic birdie 3 on the fifth hole!

As our season long Order of Merit enters the final weeks it is close at the top with just 2 events to go and all to play for. Just 1 point separates the top 2 in the 18-hole division whilst the top 3 in the Short Course Division are covered by only 2 points.

And finally, congratulations to Lewis Foxall and Freddie Brazier making it to the final of the Bill Allen Cup match play. Good luck in the final!

Junior September Medal – 9th September 2023

It was great to see 19 juniors taking part and enjoying their golf on Saturday for the September Medal.

Our juniors continue to work on their games and consistently return good scores, demonstrated in the 18-hole division as 7 of 10 juniors scored nett level par or better. The September Medal was won by Theo Kirtley with an excellent nett 64 and a personal best gross 79. Zak Saunders took 2nd place by just one shot from 3rd with a nett 67.

The competition was combined with our gross qualifier for the JCB Champion of Champions, with Lewis Foxall returning the best gross of 75. Another excellent score from Lewis which qualifies him to represent Leek GC Junior Section at JCB on 30th September. Good Luck Lewis.

In the 9-hole division, Sofia Brookes took first place with 26 points, another excellent round from Sofia. Toby Dawson coming in second with 19 points. Our younger juniors playing the short course continue to make great progress and they all did well to complete their rounds in the heat. Jude Knight came in 1st place with a nett 29, 1 shot in front of Stanley Tipping in 2nd place.

Grenville Freeman Trophy – 30th August 2023

On Wednesday 30 August, following the unfortunate cancellation of our Junior Open, instead our juniors played for the Grenville Freeman Trophy postponed from earlier in the year.

The 18-hole division was incredibly tight with the top 2 juniors on 45 points having to be separated on a countback over the last 6 holes of the front 9, with the back 9, 6, 3, 1 holes all being tied! Thomas Harvey came out in 1st place for his first victory in our competitions, beating Oliver Carter into 2nd place. Well done to both, excellent scoring.

We had limited numbers in our 9-hole and short course divisions due to the holidays and work commitments, but those that turned out enjoyed their games.

Pro’s Day for Juniors – 20th August 2023

On Sunday 20 August, 19 juniors turned out for Pro’s Day hosted by our Club Professional, Greg Rogula. It was a fantastic afternoon, enjoyed by both the juniors and the parents that came out to support. All the juniors enjoyed having a go at ‘Beat the Pro’ on the 11th hole with a couple coming away with prizes.

In the 18-hole division, there were two excellent scores of 45 points from Lewis Foxall (gross 74) and Spencer Pickin (gross 86). It was Spencer that came in 1st on countback with a back-9 of 23 points. In 3rd place with 44 points was Albie Carter.

The 9-hole division was won by Archie Clacher with an incredible 32 points and a personal best competition score of gross 44. Archie Knight came in 2nd with 30 points and another personal best competition score of gross 49. Well done boys!

In our Short Course division, Jude Knight was our winner with a nett 32 and Conor Riley coming in 2nd with nett 35.

Massive thanks to Greg Rogula for putting on a great afternoon for the juniors, the prizes and his hospitality at the halfway house. A brilliant day that they’ll no doubt be looking forward to next year!

Norman Turner Trophy – 19th August 2023

On Saturday 19 August our juniors finally got to play a competition without it being cancelled or pouring down with rain. We had 14 juniors taking part in the Norman Turner Trophy across our 3-divisions.

It was tight at the top in the 18-hole division with the top two places being decided by a back-9 countback after superb scores of 42 points. It was our Junior Captain, Lewis Foxall, coming in 1st place beating Thomas Harvey into 2nd over the back-9.  A countback decided 3rd and 4th places, Theo Khalifa beating Spencer Pickin, both on 41 points.

With it being the school holidays we saw limited numbers in the 9-hole and short course divisions. Archie Clacher taking first place in the 9-hole division by just 1 point over Sofia Brookes, and Conor Riley winning the Short Course division with a 32 nett.

Well done to all that took part, some excellent scoring all round.
