Captain's Welcome Message

As the Club Captain of Leek Golf Club for the season of 2024, may I offer you a sincere and warm welcome, whether you are a member, visitor or merely a ‘website browser.’

I have been a member for 14 years now, joining in 2010 and I have lived in the Staffordshire Moorlands area for a good many years. Although compared to many of our long-term members, my membership has been quite brief, I feel really privileged to have had a fantastic experience during this period. To this end, I always enjoy the challenge of playing what I consider to be one of the best designed courses and all-round tests of skill in the greater area. If you are a visitor, I hope, and I feel sure that you will leave with good memories of our course, and will want to visit us again in the near future.

Officially, our Club was founded in 1892, and is therefore a member of the 1892 Clubs. Following a spell originally located across the road consisting of nine holes, a few years later another nine holes were added this side of the road, before moving to what is the current Westwood location where it remained for some 24 years. LGC was finally relocated to its current ‘Birchall’ location on 31st May 1923, and officially opened on the 5th July 1923.

Year by year, we are gradually moving out of the distressing aftermath of the ‘pandemic’ and back towards a ‘full recovery’ and normality, with improvements continually being made to our course. In whatever capacity you visit, you will always receive a warm and friendly welcome from our professional, Greg Rogula, our members, the House team, and Office staff, to help complete your ‘golfing experience’ here at Leek Golf Club.

This year we are proud to host the Staffordshire Ladies County Championship, a three day even held over a weekend in the middle of May.

For the casual or diverse golfer, we also welcome small and large groups or societies and we accept the county card.

It has always been our policy to welcome new members, and we provide an ideal introduction through our club professional Greg Regula, who offers an excellent Academy Programme, which would prove invaluable to anyone considering joining our club. We also have a reciprocal agreement with six local golf courses where we can play at
members guest rates.

Our Club has a notable tradition of charitable donations, through a variety of events, and during my Captaincy I will be supporting the DougieMac Hospice, and the Peter Alliss wheelchair appeal, which I hope everyone will support wherever possible.

Finally, I would like to thank my predecessor, Peter Cordon – Club Captain 2023, for a successful year, and introduce my Vice-Captain for 2024, Paul Douglas.

I wish you all a most enjoyable and sociable season of golf for 2024.

Tony Lovatt
Club Captain 2024
