The weather conditions were wet and blustery making the scoring perhaps more difficult than any other competition day this season. With a full field of members supporting Club Captain Dave Gallimore it was hoped that everyone would not only survive the arduous conditions but also be able to hold a good score together when one of the frequent showers descended up on them.
At the halfway house there were few good scores to talk about although Liam Hancock and Steve Matthews had amassed 20 points at this stage. With the more difficult closing holes to contend with the winners of the Divisional prizes and the Overall winner were still unknown.
The Captain and his wife Jackie had provided a variety of pies, pasties and oatcakes as well as the traditional choice of beverages. These were served by the lovely Marilyn Boulton, Jean Eccleston and her daughter Kirsty with a smile on their faces as the “banter” with our gentlemen members continued throughout the day.
With the conditions getting better for those who had the later tee times it was probable that the Divisional Winners would be completing their rounds late in the day and that proved to be the case.
The Captain says “I would like to thank everyone who has played in this event today and particularly those people who have supported me in putting this day together. From Dave Brookhouse who has sorted the hole in one prizes for me, The President John Carr for taking photographs at the presentation, the ladies in the halfway house, Jen Flavell and her team, Greens Staff who have done a great job all year and of course Greg, Jake & Liam in the shop for providing a worthy table of prizes. A very special mention must go to my Vice Captain Trevor Eccleston for combating the elements on the 1st tee ensuring that you all set off on time and with a smile on your face. Today has been memorable for so many reasons and I will put those memories alongside the other ones that you have all given to me during my year as your Club Captain”.

LEEK GC TEAMS HISTORICALLY APPEAR IN LEAGUE KNOCKOUT FINALS
In a very rare occurrence, Leek GC have managed to have TWO teams in the NS&DGL finals to be held at Wolstanton GC on Saturday 7th September.
There are only THREE knockout competitions hels annually by the league, so for us to reach the final with two teams is truly exceptional.
In the JIM CUMBERBATCH knockout (played off scratch) Ross Salmon lead the inspired team of Ian Curley, Duncan Stott, James Cowburn and Liam Hancock to victory in the semi-final, and won the chance to play Wolstanton in the final.
In the DOFSKY CUP knockout (played with 3 players under 10 handicap and 3 players over 10 handicap) Mark Shea earned the right to play in the final with Dave Alcock, Tony Clark, Peter Cordon, Zulf Khalifa and Ross Martin. Andy Tooth has played in all the rounds but was not available in the semi-final.
Leek GC Vice-Captain Dave Gallimore (President of the League) was quoted as saying "To have TWO teams in the finals is an outstanding achievement by Leek GC, and all your support is now need to back these players to succeed at the last hurdle. In my knowledge only Westwood GC and Burslem GC in recent years have reached the finals in two out of the three events available-well done to Leek GC".
PLEASE COME ALONG AND SUPPORT THESE PLAYERS, WHO HAVE WORKED VERY HARD TO REACH THESE FINALS. FIRST TEE-TIME IS 12.30PM ON SATURDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER
Captain's Day for Men-2013
A record 188 members participated in the largest internal event of the Leek Golf Club calendar, teeing off from 7.20am to 3.30pm in 4's all off the first tee. Starting duties were shared by Dave Gallimore and Brian Baggaley, who sent each and every player out with words of encouragement and no doubt a friendly quip.
The winner of the Captain's Prize (£250 voucher) was new member Spencer Henson, who achieved a remarkable 44 points off his handicap of 19 (adjusted off 18 to 43 points).
The prizes for divisional winners were shared as follows; 1st £100 Voucher; 2nd £75 Voucher; 3rd £50 Voucher
Divisional Winners were as follows:
Division 1 (0-9) 1st:Dan Smart 38 points (Back 9 of 17); 2nd: Darryl Spooner 38 points (Back 9 of 16); 3rd: Chris Lilley 37 points (Back 9 of 21)
Division 2 (10-15) 1st: Wayne Corden 40 points; 2nd: Mick Barker 38 points (Back 9 of 22); 3rd: John Plant 38 points (Back 9 of 21)
Division 3 (16-21) 1st: Mick Leese 39 points (Back 9 of 20); 2nd: Roy Morris 39 points (Back 9 of 19); 3rd: Alex Mitchell 35 points (Back 9 of 21)

CSS was 71 and there were 25 x 2's. Nobody achieved a hole-in-one, which would have netted them a range of prizes included a £5,000 payout!
Thanks must be given to the wonderful ladies in the Millenium Pavilion who provided food and drink to the many players. Thank you Carol Mottram, Pauline Swindells, Margaret Whitfield, Marilyn Boulton, Jayne Baxter and Jackie Gallimore.
However the biggest 'thank you' must go to Peter Mottram, Captain of Leek Golf Club, for his enormous generosity in providing the impressive prize list amongst other things. In addition the day would not have run so smoothly without the tremendous efforts of Peter's vice-captain Dave Gallimore.
Peter would like to thank everyone who attended and hopes that a repeat performance will take place next year.
