Captain's Day For Juniors - Saturday 15th June 2013
Captain’s Day for Juniors was blessed with the rarity of a rain free day. 18 juniors competed for the Captain’s Prize, Divisional Awards, Nearest the Pin, and Putting competition, generously provided by the Captain, Peter Mottram, and supported by the Vice-Captain, Dave Gallimore and Dave’s wife Jackie.
With the course in excellent condition, scoring proved difficult, and any score of 30 points or over was very creditable. There were, however, two exceptions. For most competitions, James Davies’ score of 41 points would be pushing for the winner’s enclosure. His card included a 2 on the 11th and could have been better had it not been for a “blob” on the 14th – but still an excellent performance. However the Junior Section has now upgraded the golfing term “bandit”, to the word “super-bandit”. James Holland recorded an amazing 49 points, including two holes where only 1 point was recorded. The highlight of the round was a sequence of GROSS par scores on ALL the Par 3 holes – 4th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th.
The full list of prize winners is listed below, and all should be congratulated. The list of prizes included two additions, organised by the Vice-Captain: 10 holes of golf with the Club Champion, Ian Curley; and a 4BBB match over 10 holes with two members of the Club’s League 1st Team. Hopefully the juniors winning these prizes will gain the benefit if playing with some of the best players in the Club.
The Captain hosted a meal for all competitors, after which he awarded the competition prizes, assisted by junior committee members Alan Tipping and Jake Scragg.

County Academy Assessment Days
As part of England Golf’s junior development initiative, The Staffordshire County Academy Programme (CAP) looks to identify junior golfers (girls and boys) with potential from across the county and help nurture them to maximise their potential and prepare them for elite development. We have 8 academy centres across the county and the programme is designed to compliment coaching that is already provided at golf clubs and facilities.
We run 2 squads at each venue – the Development Squad is for less experienced younger juniors who may not yet have a handicap but clearly have potential. The Futures Squads include juniors who have been identified as having potential as elite golfers.
We would like to expand our squads in 2013 and will be holding a series of assessment sessions to identify juniors who will be considered for the Academy Programme.
We would ideally like to see all juniors who are currently not part of the academy from the ages 7-17, and would ask you to encourage all juniors within your junior section to attend one of the assessment sessions as listed below.
- Trentham Golf Club – May 19th
- 3 Hammers Golf Complex – May 26th
- Drayton Park Golf Club – June 2nd
Each junior will need to register online through the CGP website - http://www.staffsgolfpartnership.com/
Please feel free to contact me about any aspect of the CAP programme and we very much look forward to meeting the juniors from your club at one of the assessments

Staffs County League Boys Team Final - Brocton
On Sunday 21st October 2012 our Boys Junior Section took part in the Staffs County League Boys Final held at Brocton Hall Golf Club.
4 Counties Team Event 2012
Harry Fearn was selected to play for Staffordshire at Broughton Heath Golf Club in Derbyshire on Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st July as part of a six boy team.
Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire were all playing for the title of Four Counties Champion.
Going into the event Nottinghamshire were the favourites as their team had the lowest handicaps and they were retaining champions.
Each player played a scratch match game against another player from the different counties.
Harry had a fantastic start and beat his opponent from Derbyshire 6/5 on the Monday. On Tuesday morning Harry lost to his opponent 4/2. His final game was against Nottinghamshire and Harry had a flying start -1 after 2 holes, getting to 4 up with 5 to play the Nottinghamshire player pulled one back. On the 16th the hole was surrounded by water and the Nottinghamshire player missed the green and Harry went straight for the pin with a 5 iron. The ball settled to 12' from the hole and Harry converted the put for a birdie two. This performance helped Staffordshire win this prestigious event for the first time.
Very well done to Harry and the other Staffordshire players.
