Junior Section Quiz Night - Friday 15th March 2024 + Junior Raffle
Junior Section Quiz Night
On Friday 15th March the Junior Section hosted their first quiz night. It was a fantastic night with 17 teams and 86 people taking part – great to see a wide range of juniors, family, friends and club members enjoying the evening.
1st place in the quiz and a £75 voucher for Hotel Rudyard went to Stymied (Chris Birch’s team)
Whilst Parates of the Caribbean picked up the bespoke, handcrafted LGC Juniors wooden spoons for the booby prize.
Special mentions to Andrew Baxter, our resident Quiz Master, and his partner Jayne for running the quiz. Also to Gavin and team (kitchen), and Maisie (bar) who’s service made it a such a great evening.
The evening also saw the draw of the Junior Section Raffle. Congratulations to all our winners and thanks to all those that supported and made the raffle a success – more to follow on this.
Again, thanks to all those that attended and made for a great evening.

Junior October Medal - Saturday 14th October 2023
On Saturday 14th October our Juniors braved the weather and played their October Medal. On a really difficult day for scoring, they faced a long course and conditions from glorious sunshine to strong winds, driving rain and even hail! Well done to the juniors taking part, all demonstrated fantastic attitudes and still enjoyed their golf.
The 18-hole division was won by Theo Kirtley with an excellent nett 69, gross 83, continuing his good recent form. Needing a win for a chance of claiming the Order of Merit title, Lewis Foxall put up a valiant effort in 2nd place on nett 73, gross 79. After a tense wait as the scores came in, this left Austin Rogula as the Order of Merit winner for the 18-hole division. Well done Austin.
In the 9-hole division Archie Knight came in 1st place with 18pts, a result which also saw him take the top spot in the season long Order of Merit. Well done Archie. 2nd place on the day went to Theo Dawson with 15pts.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, we only had two entries in the Short Course Division. Given the conditions there were two fantastic scores from Jude Knight, 1st place with nett 27, and Conor Riley, nett 31. Under the circumstances, with the standings being so close, a mutual decision was made to award 1st place in their Order of Merit to the trio of Conor Riley, Stanley Tipping and Jude Knight. This recognises the aim of the award at this level being to encourage regular participation in the group, as well as the fantastic progress all three have made this year.

Ladies Section Junior Trophy – 7th October 2023
On Saturday 7th October the Juniors played the Ladies Section Junior Trophy. Our Lady Captain, Lesley Powell, was in attendance greeting the juniors with chocolates on the first tee!
The 18-hole Division was won by Albie Carter with 34pts, ahead of three juniors tied on 31pts in second. Theo Kirtley took 2nd place on countback. Austin Rogula came in 4th place to take the lead in the 18-hole Division Order of Merit by 6pts.
In the 9-hole Division, Henry Smith came in 1st place for the second competition running with an excellent score of 28pts. 2nd place with 22pts went to Archie Clacher, extending his lead in the 9-hole Division Order of Merit.
The Short Course Division was won by Ila Marson, parring the last for an excellent nett 35 to win by 1 shot. Conor Riley took 2nd place which saw him move into tied 1st in their Order of Merit, level with Stanley Tipping.
We’ve run a season long Order of Merit for each division sponsored by our Professional, Greg Rogula, with the intention to encourage regular participation. With a maximum 12pts for 1st place it’s great to see all divisions with something to play for as they go into the final event.
Elsewhere, we had three Juniors attend the Elite Squads County training at JCB Golf and Country Club, a fantastic experience with them enjoying the facilities, coaching and playing the course. Leek’s Theo Khalifa won the U14s 9-hole event with a superb +4 gross score.

Frances Lilley Jubilee Trophy - Saturday 23rd September 2023
On Saturday 23rd September, 30 members from across the Men’s, Ladies and Junior sections came together to play the Frances Lilley Jubilee Trophy.
Thanks to Marion Lilley it was great to see the event back in the calendar after a number of years and for the event to be so well supported by all sections. Formerly the Jubilee Trophy, the competition has been renamed in memory of the late Frances Lilley recognising the hard work Frances put into organising the event over the years and her keen support of the junior section.
In teams consisting of 1x gent, lady and junior the competition was played in good spirits, with some taking it more seriously than others. Thanks to the President, Mike Wootton, and Lady Captain, Lesley Powell, for their support and playing in the opening group. Unfortunately, the Junior Captain couldn’t attend due to Lewis representing Staffordshire U16s.
The event was fittingly won by the team of Marion Lilley, Zulf Khalifa and Spencer Pickin with a score of 76 points, just 1 point ahead of second. Nearest the pin on the 7th hole was won by Jayne Baxter.
Thanks to all those that took part and to Chris Lilley for generously hosting the refreshments on the 11th.

George Mountford Trophy – 16th September 2023
On Saturday 16th September the Juniors played the George Mountford Trophy.
Our Junior Captain, Lewis Foxall, continued his excellent form returning a gross 73 for 40 points to win the 18-hole Division. Lewis has played some outstanding golf over the summer and is now down to a 4.5 handicap. Second place was taken by Theo Khalifa on 37 points.
In the 9-hole Division it was Henry Smith coming in first with a score of 18 points, ahead of Toby Dawson in second on 14 points. Our Short Course Division was won with an excellent nett 29 by Jude Knight who has incredibly won the last 4 events he’s played. Second place going to Stanley Tipping with nett 32. Special mention to Ila Marson making a fantastic birdie 3 on the fifth hole!
As our season long Order of Merit enters the final weeks it is close at the top with just 2 events to go and all to play for. Just 1 point separates the top 2 in the 18-hole division whilst the top 3 in the Short Course Division are covered by only 2 points.
And finally, congratulations to Lewis Foxall and Freddie Brazier making it to the final of the Bill Allen Cup match play. Good luck in the final!
