This fixture has changed in title in recent years from ‘Leek Committee vs Trentham Committee’ to just a friendly fixture and now is perceived by Trentham as a Seniors’ fixture.
In addition, lack of numbers in the last couple of years by Trentham have meant it not taking place at all, so both clubs and captains were delighted to resurrect this fixture on a home and away basis.
Leek’s vice-captain Phill Davies and our professional staff had assembled 12 players to represent the club, and this away fixture turned out to be a very successful day, Leek winning by the margin of 3½ points to 2½ points. The course was in beautiful condition, and the sun blazed all day, making stopping the ball on the slick greens a tricky affair indeed.
Trentham have a system within their seniors’ section of having a captain for the day on a rotation basis, and their nominated man on the day was Jonathan Steed, who spoke eloquently about this very meaningful fixture for them, one which hopefully will go from strength to strength in coming years.
Leek’s captain Andy Baxter was the Avenger on this occasion by beating him and his partner Peter O’Hagan with the assistance of Dave Gallimore by the margin of 3 and 1.
George Tatton and Dave Weaver won 1 up, Mike Wootton and Dave Smith finished all square. Nick Wittich and Brian Hollins came second by 2 and 1, Paul Douglas and John Cooper won 2 and 1 and Tony Swindells and Alan Whitfield lost 3 and 2.
The captain thanks all for turning up and playing in this fixture, one which cemented our relationship with Trentham, and was a great advert for inter-friendly golf between two fine North Staffordshire clubs.
