Lounge Refurbishment

For those of you itching to see what’s going on in the lounge area, your wait will soon be over! Half way through and Darren (Blairs) along with his work mates have really worked wonders. The far, dark, brick work has been covered and plastered. Coving now softens the room and has had its first sealing coat of paint. New radiators are due to go in this week and the blinds altered to fit back. The curtains have been cleaned and a deep carpet clean is due, after the dance floor has been sanded & varnished with three coats! All the photos are being placed back in a better ‘user friendly’ design to enable the sequenced positioning. So, as you can appreciate, both the House Chair and Captain are working hard on your behalf to achieve a fresher, welcoming lounge for us all to enjoy.

First Quiz Night of 2015 - Thursday 15th January

Last Thursday saw the inaugural social event of 2015 at Leek Golf Club with the first of 6 planned quizzes taking place at the club house.

Nine teams of four gathered to test their grey matter and support the Lady Captain’s Charity (The Donna Louise Children’s Hospice). Quiz master, Andrew Baxter, was ably assisted by Stephen Wales on the projector, showing the rolling scores throughout the night. Great excitement being shown by the “No hopers” as they realised that there would be a prize for the team propping all the others up! Jayne & Chloe (Baxter) formed the support act, ably supplying the drinks and nibbles throughout the evening as concentration was applied to the answering of the questions posed over eight rounds.

The triumphant team – “Birchall Lane Boys” – comprising James Willshaw, Paul Bray, Phil Culleton and captain Stewart Townsend, obviously enjoyed the continuous supply of Peroni, which lubricated their grey matter well as they clearly won with 232pts each receiving a bottle of wine. The runners up were Dave & Karen Griffiths along with Mike & Maria Wootton of “Bright Sparks” with 191pts each receiving a variety of sweets.

To round off the night with a slight twist the winners were challenged to answer a ‘rollover’ question worth £50 after two minutes deliberation! “If, in the game of Monopoly, you were to land on Park Lane with three houses on, what rent would you have to pay?” A slightly more challenging question than those already answered with the outcome that a wrong answer was given! Consequently, on Saturday, 28th February, our 2nd quiz night, the ‘rollover’ question will be worth £100!

If you need any more incentive to join in let me know. Jayne, Lady Captain, sincerely thanked all who supported the evening and Andrew for the work involved in compiling the questions and after expenses nearly £65 was raised for her charity.
