138 players entered this "Major" with Chris Flavell leaving everyone behind with a stunning net 66 off 5 handicap. The next best scores were G. Richardson & G. Salt with 68's and L. Hancock coming 4th with 69. No-one else broke par on a day when CSS was 72.
There were several highlights in the day, undoubtedly the best of the lot was Steve Fryer's hole-in-one on the 11th. This is the second such feat by a member of Leek Golf Club in the last two weeks! Chris Flavell got a "2" on the 12th (it certainly helps if you can drive THAT green), and Gareth Salt chipped in for a "2" on the 5th.
Despite all this going on, general scoring was difficult, with the dry conditions allowing the ball to travel a long way resulting in fairways being over-hit, and target golf becoming tricky.
The wind off the 1st tee was considerably behind the players, as 13 birdies on that hole can testify.
Congratulations to the greens staff for dealing with ever-changing weather conditions. The course looked in good order, and will be a good test this week for the Seniors' Open, next week for the Mixed Open, and in three weeks' time for the Men's Invitation.
