Formby Hall Golf and Spa Resort on the Lancashire coast was the location selected by this years Captain and his wife. They were joined by 48 of their friends from Leek Golf Club for this traditional weekend away.
The weather was hot throughout, sometimes too hot, but this just led to plenty of liquid refreshment being taken on the patio by the 18th green by players and spectators alike. Most players took advantage of a friendly practice round on the Friday afternoon before joining Dave and Jackie in their luxury suite for pre-dinner drinks. These were served by “The Three Amigos”, dressed as waiters, Trevor Eccleston, Dave Allen and Graham Cook who did the job that well, that you would have thought that they had been waiters in a previous life.
After dinner entertainment was in the form of a “Mr and Mrs” competition involving a series of searching questions for 6 of our Club’s well known couples and I would love to divulge some of the personal things that go on behind closed doors but as always.............. “what goes on tour stays on tour” as they say. The competition was won by the smallest of margins by Tony Lovatt and his bride to be Christine Roberts (September 18th), the only non-married couple to take part in the competition.
On Saturday the golf started in earnest with individual Stableford Competitions for both the Men and the Ladies. The course was very tough and anyone not losing a ball was likely to be in with a chance of winning. The result was as follows;
PETER CORDON 32 PTS KAREN GRIFFITHS 32 PTS
TONY BRINDLEY 31 PTS JAYNE BAXTER 32 PTS
DUNCAN STOTT 31 PTS JENNY CORDON 31 PTS
Nearest the pin prizes:
2nd Dunc Stott: 6th Tony Swindells: 13th Lincoln Boulton: 16th Peter Cordon:
The Saturday evening was a traditional “Formal Evening” where the gentlemen wore jacket and tie whist the ladies dressed in their best finery. They all looked beautiful and eagerly awaited the “New Format” announcement for the next days play. After resorting to the Club’s Spike Bar, Dave announced that the Ladies who had found the day a difficult one would receive a few courtesy points from the Captain to help them along the following day, and the Ladies who had experienced some success would get nothing from the Captain to improve their scores the following day. The Mens 4BBB Event had now been cancelled and replaced with the same format as the Ladies with “Courtesy Points” being given to some and not others. Overall this worked very well and the results for Sundays play were as stated below;
DAVE ALLEN 37 PTS JANET GILBERT 34 PTS
MIKE WOOTTON 35 PTS JANET WOOD 27 PTS
There were only two 2’s achieved on the day and they were Adrian Briggs and Dave Gallimore who received 6 golf balls each. (The Captain will donate his to the Junior Section at LGC).
During the duration of our stay at Formby Hall there was a prize for the Top Lady and the Top Man on the Par 3 Course. For those who are unfamiliar it is a “Graveyard For Golfballs” and many many balls were lost in the water hazards on offer. A great golf swing, a positive putter and a positive mental attitude was required to win this event and the successful golfers were;
MENS DAVE GRIFFITHS 21 PTS (from Duncan Stott who shot one under gross 26)
LADIES GILL DAMJANOVIC 21 PTS (from Ann Cockersole 20pts)
The main prizes for the weekend were for the “Overall Aggregate” scores where the two scores on the Championship Course were added together. After some excellent golf in exhausting conditions these were won by;
MENS DUNC STOTT 64 PTS LADIES JAYNE BAXTER 62 PTS
ANDY BAXTER 63 PTS JOY BRIGGS 61 PTS
LINCOLN BOULTON 62 PTS MARILYN BOULTON 57 PTS
Jackie and I would really like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended for making this one of the most memorable weekends of my Captaincy. Jackie is delighted with her gift that you so generously contributed to and is relieved that no one was too offended by the “Mr and Mrs” competition on the Friday evening. We would both like to wish next year’s Captain, Trevor Eccleston and his wife Jean a similar experience when they will be joined by friends at Forest Pines in Lincolnshire.
Thanks for making it special.
Dave & Jackie Gallimore
